Some of our favorite books on Emeralds
and Gemstones
Emerald and Other Beryls-John
Sinkankas
If you buy only one book on
emeralds, this is the book to get. It is the definitive
work, and is a true masterpiece on the subject of
emeralds. Unfortunately it is is difficult to buy these
days and most copies we have seen online are used and
expensive.
Emeralds (The Fred Ward Gem
Book)-Fred Ward
As with all the Fred Ward books,
there are great photos. This is an excellent introduction
to emeralds. Also, there is a nice amount of emerald
history and a thorough discussion of some the most
historic pieces of Emerald jewelry.
Emerald and Tanzanite Buying
Guide-Renee Newman
Some nice photos of both Emeralds
and Tanzanite. This is a nice guide with some good buying
tips aimed at the retail buyer. It was published in 1999,
so it might be getting a little dated.
Emeralds Around the World-Jules Roger
Sauer
Fabulous photos of emeralds and
emerald jewelry from around the world by the well known
Brazilian JR Sauer owner of some 40 Amsterdam-Sauer
jewelry stores around the world. Published in 1990 it is
out of print but not hard to find used.
Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Buying
Guide-Renee Newman
Profusely illustrated with great
photos and excellent sections on judging the real from
fakes. This is a good comprehensive guide. There are also
some very nice close up photos of jewelry illustrating
their finish and settings.
Gemstones (Smithsonian
Handbook)-Cally Hall
Like most DK books, the quality is
excellent with nice high gloss photos. It is a clear
concise guide, especially good for beginners. Amazon
reviewers have also suggested this book as a nice tool
for jewelers to use with their customers.
Gemology: An Annotated
Bibliography-John Sinkankas
This incredible book is for the
serious gemologist. It is the most comprehensive
bibliography of books and periodicals on gemology. It
covers the years 1500 until 1985. Another masterpiece by
Sinkankas.
The Curious Lore of Precious
Stones-George Frederick Kunz
George Kunz is reknowned as the
father of American Gemology. This book was a classic when
it was first printed in 1913 and it is still a great
reference guide. There is an incredible amount of depth
convering the history, folklore, and relgion concerning
gemsontes through the ages.
Ruby & Sapphire-Richard Hughes
Nothing about emeralds, but this is
the definitive book on ruby and sapphire. So many
gemologoical books are dry and tough to read-not this
one. Richard Hughes is a great writer with a great sense
of humor as well. The meticulous bibliography alone is
worth the price of the book! You can order it directly
from him by clicking on the link.
